melanocytes (melanoblasts)

Pigment cells that produce melanin for skin and fur/hair pigmentation. They originate in the neural crest during foetal development and migrate to basal layer of the epidermis (in the skin) during foetal development and synthesize melanin pigment in the form of melanosomes. Melanin pigment is also passed on to basal keratinocytes.
